FIGURE 2. Traditional X-ray scattering experiment setup. Photo Credit: Argonne National Laboratory. In addition to the setup shown in Figure 2, time resolution at BioCARS is provided by precise synchronization of additional beam blocking equipment placed before the sample under test—two rotating disk choppers and a shutter [2]. The X-ray beam is intercepted by a watercooled heat load chopper which reduces the average power of the beam into bursts of pulses but does not attenuate the pulses. The continuously repeating bursts of pulses then travel through a shutter which isolates a single burst of synchrotron pulses. Finally, a high speed chopper is used to extract a single X-ray pulse from the isolated burst of pulses. This paper describes the design and testing of a new water-cooled air bearing heat load chopper with nanosecond-level jitter.

A kHz heat-load shutter for white-beam experiments at synchrotron sources.

A heat-load shutter capable of frequencies from one to several tens of kHz and window times from 10 micros up to 1 ms is described. In the current configuration the water-cooled shutter absorbs approximately 99% of the heat generated by the white beam. It has been successfully used for extended periods synchronized with a Jülich pulse-selector operating at 946 Hz. The temperature of the pulse-s...

Thermal deformation of cryogenically cooled silicon crystals under intense X-ray beams: measurement and finite-element predictions of the surface shape

X-ray crystal monochromators exposed to white-beam X-rays in third-generation synchrotron light sources are subject to thermal deformations that must be minimized using an adequate cooling system. A new approach was used to measure the crystal shape profile and slope of several cryogenically cooled (liquid nitrogen) silicon monochromators as a function of beam power in situ and under heat load....

Heat bump on a monochromator crystal measured with X-ray grating interferometry.

Deformation of the first crystal of an X-ray monochromator under the heat load of a high-power beam, commonly referred to as `heat bump', is a challenge frequently faced at synchrotron beamlines. Here, quantitative measurements of the deformations of an externally water-cooled silicon (111) double-crystal monochromator tuned to a photon energy of 17.6 keV are reported. These measurements were m...

Optimal Short-Term Scheduling of Multi-Chiller Plants Considering Energy Requirement of Cooling Towers, Pumps and Chillers

During extremely hot summer days, air conditioning systems are known as major electricity consumers in residential, commercial and industrial sectors. Moreover, high energy requirement of multiple-chiller plants may cause an interconnected power grid be faced with annual on-peak electrical demand, load-generation mismatch, voltage collapse and catastrophic wide area blackout. Therefore, this pa...

BioCARS: a synchrotron resource for time-resolved X-ray science.

BioCARS, a NIH-supported national user facility for macromolecular time-resolved X-ray crystallography at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), has recently completed commissioning of an upgraded undulator-based beamline optimized for single-shot laser-pump X-ray-probe measurements with time resolution as short as 100 ps. The source consists of two in-line undulators with periods of 23 and 27 mm th...
